SEO plays a very important role in growing your E-Commerce business.
The organic traffic (from SEO) posses a higher potential for conversion against traffic generated from paid campaigns.
Therefore, one needs to concentrate on optimizing the E-Store website for maximum organic traffic. As a result, I have created a simple guide that is helpful to the Shopify owners as well as SEO professionals looking to optimize Shopify stores.
Additionally, you would need to read Schema Markup & its importance in SEO for every website including E-Commerce websites.
How To Implement On-Page Shopify SEO :
Keyword Research –
Begin Shopify SEO with keyword research. Finalise the set of keywords which you feel are most relevant to your product, have commercial intent, and enough monthly volume (no less than 1000)
Allocate at least one target keyword for each product and product collection (representing product category) as well. Prepare a data sheet mentioning each product against its target keyword.
This will be resourceful while optimising each product.
Once you log in to your Shopify account, you are redirected to the “Home” page. Click on the “Products” option on the left sidebar of the dashboard.
Under “Products”, all your existing products are displayed in “All Products” options.
Then, click on the product which you want to optimise for SEO. You will land on the page where you can edit every detail of the particular product.
Product Title –
To optimise the product details, begin with editing product title.
Insert the target keyword assigned to this product in the title of the product. The title needs not to be the target keyword alone. Instead add few more words to the target keyword which gives a clear idea about the product.
SEO Implications – Whatever you enter under the title option gets added as the “page title” of the very webpage. The page title is one of the indicators that signal search engines what the particular webpage is all about.
Product Description –
The next task in Shopify SEO is to write the product description in detail as much as possible. And insert the same focus keyword of the product in the product description as well. At least twice.
Insert internal link to other similar products from your store. This helps in two ways. One is that the user may find the other relevant product interesting and may end up buying. Another benefit of using the internal link is that this improves internal linking and leads to better SEO of the website.
In the description, utilise the “formatting” option for inserting header tags lke header 1, & Header 2.
Give heading and subheading to the product description using these tags. Don’t forget to insert your focus keywords here. This again is a signal to the search engine and helps in better ranking for your target keyword.
SEO Implication – Longer and detailed product descriptions help in avoiding thin content. Internal linking passes link juice to other product pages of our website improving the overall SEO of the E-Store.
Media / Product Images –
Product image is one of the most important factor for your E-Commerce business.
It can make or break the impression of the potential customer. Additionally, product images play an important role in the SEO of E-Commerce websites. Let’s find out how to optimize images for Shopify SEO.
Under the media section (just after the description section), click on “add media”
You will be prompted to upload the product image. Upload the same but make sure the image size is under 100 kb. This improves page loading time, an important ranking factor for search engines.
After you upload the product image, click on the image and you will be shown “add alt text”. Click on it and insert the target keyword as the alt text of the image. This helps in ranking the product image on the search engine for your focus keyword.
SEO Implications: Alt text gives context to the image as search engines are unable to read them. It ranks our product image for the keyword and helps us getting organic traffic from image searches.
Search Engine Listing Preview –
This is last section of the product dashboard which is specifically provided for SEO purpose by the Shopify to its users.
For carrying out Shopify SEO, you need to write the title and meta description of the product. But these are different from the title and description mentioned earlier. As these are visible in search results when a user searches using the keyword as a search query.
These two entities are called title tag and meta description tag. Inserting the focus keywords in both these tags helps in optimising thee web page.
These tags can be utilised to attract the attention of the user and make him click on your web page. But the information should be true and relevant to the product.
At the bottom, we have the option to set the URL of the product. Use this option to include the focus keyword of the product’s URL. As the URL is one of the most important ranking factors in SEO.
